The Goblet of Fire

recipe by half baked harvest

The Goblet of Fire cocktail. Inspired by the Harry Potter series, this bubbly, firey, ruby red drink is a mix of smashed blackberries, rum, bitters, sweet honey, and spices. A little spiced rum on top lights the drink up with spooky flames, adding such an element of fun. This incredibly simple cocktail is nothing short of delicious. It’s the perfect moody drink to serve up this Halloween…or anytime you’re in need of a good Harry Potter cocktail.

If you’ve read the Harry Potter series, or seen the movies, you know that the “Goblet of Fire” is a goblet for the tri wizard cup that students throw their names into to be selected to compete. The firey flames blazing from the goblet are what inspired this cocktail – if you didn’t already guess that.

I’ve wanted to create a cocktail called the Goblet of Fire for years. Finally, this is the year!

I knew I wanted to create a drink that was deep and rich in color, spiced, and of course delicious. I also knew it needed to be perfectly seasonal, warming, and…able to be lit on fire. Yes, it needed that extra special touch!

Basically, this drink is an old fashioned made with rum and smashed blackberries. You could use bourbon, but I think the rum makes it extra special.

It’s really very simple. Smash the blackberries up with the golden rum, bitters, and a small drizzle of honey to sweeten. You can also add a touch of rosemary if you’d like. Then shake, shake, and strain the drink into a fun goblet-style glass or wine glass.

what makes the drink light on fire?

Rum that’s labeled 151 proof or higher. The rum needs to have a pretty high alcohol content to really get a nice flame.

The key is to just top the drink so it’s not overpowering but will still do the trick. You’ll want to use 151 proof rum. Low alcohol rum will work too, but the flame will be less visible. The rum I used was spiced, which fits really nicely with the rest of the ingredients in this drink.

If you’d like to create sparks, simply sprinkle a lit bit of cinnamon, which is obviously so much fun.

Then blow the fire out and add an ice cube to chill the drink back down.

Obviously, the fire is just for fun. But it makes the drink spookily pretty and so good. Sweet, with a warming spicy kick that’s perfect for fall!

Ingredients

  • 6 blackberries

  • 2 ounces gold rum (bourbon works too)

  • 2 dashes bitters

  • 1 – 2 teaspoons honey

  • 1-2 teaspoons fresh rosemary (optional)

  • splash of 151 proof rum (mine was spiced)

Directions

1. Combine the blackberries, rum, bitters, honey, and rosemary in a cocktail shaker. Muddle, squishing the berries to release the juices. Add ice and shake to combine.

2. Strain into a goblet or wine glass. Top with a splash of 151 proof spiced rum. Then using a lighter, light the drink on fire. You can sprinkle with cinnamon to ignite sparks.

3. Blow the flame out, then add a cube of ice to chill. Drink!
